  16. in Lausanne, Switzerland. Queen Zein, known to Jordanians as
  17. the Queen Mother, protected her son during his difficult early
  18. years on the throne, which he inherited in 1952 when his mentally
  19. ill father was removed by the Jordanian parliament. Later, Queen
  20. Zein exerted a powerful behind-the-scenes influence on King
  21. Hussein, who often sought her advice during times of turmoil.
